Beaufort man charged with drug possession, trafficking

A Beaufort man who said he began dealing drugs to support his family was charged with prescription drug possession and trafficking cocaine after being pulled over for a burnt-out headlight.

Tommy L. Bunton Jr., 27, was arrested at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday following a traffic stop at the intersection of Parris Island Gateway and Oak View Drive in Burton, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

During the stop, a deputy noticed Bunton had constricted pupils and diminished awareness and asked him to step outside the car, the report said. Deputies allegedly found orange prescription bottles containing a substance later confirmed to be cocaine in Bunton's pockets, the report said. Bunton also allegedly produced an oxycodone pill from his sock.

Deputies ultimately discovered 11.4 grams of cocaine in the bottles, according to the report.

Bunton later told deputies that he began selling drugs a couple months ago to support his family and supplement his income from two jobs, according to the report.

He is being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center, according to the jail log.
