The Old Commons Neighborhood Association will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its founding with the dedication of a marker in honor of its first chairman and founding member, John Gettys Smith, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday
The marker, which recognizes Smith for his work on behalf of the neighborhood, will be placed adjacent to a tree in the 800 block of Prince Street planted in his memory two years ago.
Smith and other neighbors met March 3, 2003 in the then-Friends Room at the Arsenal to develop a strategy for combating repeated vandalism in the neighborhood. They also wanted to protect the neighborhood's historic resources and economic and racial diversity and to promote neighborliness and to address issues that affect the neighborhood.
