A man jumped out of a rolling car and escaped during a traffic stop in Beaufort on Saturday afternoon, leaving behind a female passenger, a 3-year-old child and a 5-month-old baby, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
A deputy attempted to stop a vehicle with a cracked windshield traveling "at a high rate of speed" on the corner of Stanley Road and Lawing Drive at about 1 p.m., according to an incident report. The driver pulled over in the driveway of an abandoned residence on Lawing Drive and jumped out of the still-moving vehicle, which crashed into the home, the report said.
The man ran off toward a wooded area with a small bag, but the deputy did not chase him because of the passengers in the car. A woman in the passenger seat was "uncooperative," saying she had met the man online and didn't know his full name, the report said.
A K-9 unit uncovered a small Crown Royal bag with a mason jar containing what deputies suspect is marijuana, but the driver was not located, the report said.
