Sleeping driver awakened with DUI arrest in Bluffton

A driver who fell asleep for about 45 minutes at the wheel of his vehicle -- with the gear shift still in drive -- was arrested for driving under the influence and possession of marijuana early Monday in Bluffton, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

A Rose Hill Plantation security guard called deputies after being alerted to the vehicle stopped at the intersection of Whiteoaks Circle and Fording Island Road, according to an incident report.

A deputy arrived at about 3:40 a.m. to find the car running, music blaring and the driver asleep. The deputy put the car in park and turned off the ignition. The driver only awoke after paramedics arrived, about 10 minutes later, the report said.

Empty beer cans and a cup believed to contain alcohol were found in the car, along with a "green leafy" substance believed to be marijuana, the report said.
