Robber takes cyclist's backpack, shoes and hat

A 20-year-old man riding his bicycle Friday near a Beaufort County recreational center in Bluffton said a man in a pickup truck ordered him to hand over his backpack, shoes and hat.

The cyclist was riding on Ulmer Road at about 9 p.m. when a black Ford F-150 approached him, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.

The driver, whom the cyclist recognized as an acquaintance known only as "Darren," said he had a knife. After the cyclist handed over the items, the man drove away, the release said.

The cyclist flagged a deputy at a gas station on Bruin Road about a half hour later.

"Darren" is described as white, 25 to 30 years old, about 5-feet-10, 220 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
