The United Way of the Lowcountry has received gifts and pledges totaling $804,096, putting it at 29 percent of its $2.8 million annual fundraising goal.
That also puts the nonprofit organization "one-third of the way toward our goal of putting an army of 600 reading volunteers in our schools," Peter Post, fundraising chairman for United Way of the Lowcountry, said in a news release.
In addition to marshaling its own volunteer reading tutors to be sent to schools in Beaufort and Jasper counties, the United Way counts among its partner agencies Born to Read, which supplies each newborn at area hospitals with a gift bag that includes a book.
