United Way of the Lowcountry is holding reading-tutor training sessions this week and next in Ridgeland and on Hilton Head Island, part of its effort to train 600 volunteers for eight schools in Beaufort County.
Sessions will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Hilton Head Island Early Learning Center, and from 1 to 3 p.m. at Ridgeland Elementary. Another session will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 27 at Hilton Head Island Elementary.
United Way already has about 200 tutors for the effort, aimed at getting at least 80 percent of local students reading at grade level by fourth grade.
