Crime reports Tuesday

Shots fired from Beaufort motel; one charged

A 20-year-old Georgia man is facing weapons charges in Beaufort after firing several shots early Sunday from a motel room.

The man, from Rockmart, Ga., was charged with one count of discharging a firearm within city limits and one count of possession of a concealed weapon, both misdemeanors, after officers were called at about 4:30 a.m. to the Quality Inn on Boundary Street.

Witnesses told officers that five to seven shots were fired from a room occupied by the man and about nine other people, Police Chief Matt Clancy said.

Officers found a small amount of marijuana in the room, as well as a .32-caliber pistol the suspect said he fired to scare off a group he said was coming to hurt him, Clancy said.

The suspect told officers the group of men returned fire before running away.

Though no injuries were reported, Clancy said the gunfire damaged a nearby transformer, which had three bullet holes in it. SCE&G repaired the damage.

None of those with the suspect could describe the man's would-be attackers or the direction they headed, Clancy said.

The suspect was released Monday from the Beaufort County Detention Center after posting bond, according to the jail log. Information on the bond amount was not available Monday.

Man shot at migrant housing on St. Helena

A 42-year-old man was shot in the torso while walking outside a migrant-worker housing area Friday on St. Helena Island, and the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is looking for the shooter.

The incident occurred at about 9 p.m. on Seaside Road. The victim told deputies he was grabbed from behind by an unknown man, who fired several rounds, one of which struck him. Witnesses said they saw three black men fleeing after the shots, but no further description was available, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.

The victim was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and was released.

Anyone with information should contact Investigator Cpl. A. Zsamar at 843-255- 3408 or the county dispatch at 843-524-2777.
