Ga. man charged in Hilton Head hubcap theft

A 37-year-old Savannah man was arrested Thursday near Coligny Beach on Hilton Head Island after a witness told deputies he saw him steal hubcaps from a Toyota Tundra.

The man was charged with misdemeanor tampering with a motor vehicle. He was arrested by Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputies around noon, according to crime reports.

There have been at least seven similar reports of hubcap thefts on Hilton Head in the past several weeks, with thieves mainly targeting Cadillac and GMC vehicles. The thieves are removing the small plastic piece that covers the wheel's lug nuts.

Deputies were called to the scene Thursday after a witness reportedly saw the man take two lug-nut covers from the 2006 Tundra parked in the Coligny Beach parking lot. Deputies caught up with him a short time later, and a search of his Honda Accord turned up eight hub cap covers and a flathead screwdriver, according to the report.

He was taken to Beaufort County Detention Center and later posted bond.
