Hilton Head Island resident Karen Ferree's two-day total of 150 was good enough for her to defend her Women's South Carolina Golf Association Senior Championship title Tuesday at Wachesaw Plantation in Murrells Inlet.
Ferree followed her opening-round 72 with a second-day 78, and it was enough for her to hold on to a 5-stroke lead over Hartsville's Elaine Johnson, who shot 77-78--155.
Hilton Head Island's Susan Cummings shot 73-83--156 to finish third.
In the Super Senior Division, Myrtle Beach's Karn Zeip defeated Columbia's Nancy Dodge on the first playoff hole for the title. Beaufort's Susan Harder was third, a stroke back.
Other winners included Toni Buerkert (Super Senior Flight 2), Beth Umberger (Senior Flight 2) and Leah Bohnen (Senior Flight 3).
HANK HANEY IJGA STUDENTS SWEEP
Thailand's Moe Numpituckchaikul, a full-time student at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy on Hilton Head Island, shot back-to-back 69s to beat classmate Adrian Gonzalez by nine strokes Sunday in the Boys 15-19 Division in the International Junior Golf Tour's Sanctuary Shootout at Sanctuary Golf Club in Beaufort.
Bluffton's Charlie Spencer-White finished in a tie for third, 11 shots back.
In the Boys Under 14 Division, IJGA student Masato Yoshitsugu beat out classmate and fellow Japanese native Tennoshin Ogawa by four strokes, 149-153. In the Girls Under 19 Division, IJGA student Saya Aono of Japan defeated classmate Ana Ruiz of Mexico by four strokes, 148-152.
AMATEUR MATCH PLAY COMING UP
The Hilton Head Island Amateur Golf Association's 2012 Match Play Tournament will begin May 19 and 20 at Old South Golf Links in Bluffton.
The event is open to all members and will be flighted according to handicap. The seeding round will be played May 19.
The first matches will tee off at 8 a.m. on May 20. Winning players may play a second match that day, as well. Each winner has a full week to complete their match, with finals to be held approximately two weeks after the initial matches.
All matches must be played at Old South. In order to receive a tee time and be an accepted applicant, players must have their 2012 dues paid and tournament fee paind no later than Friday, May 18.
HAMMONDS FOURTH AT SHOOTOUT
Bluffton's Brandi Hammonds, 17, was fourth in the Girls 15-18 Division of the 2012 Junior Shootout held April 6 and 7 at Myrtle Beach National Golf Club with a two-day total of 82-79--161, 18 strokes off the lead.
Peter Carlson hit a hole-in-one April 25th on the seventh hole at Moss Creek's North Course. Witnesses were Bob Breckinridge, Terry Reynolds, and Bill Ritchie.
Roger Scheer hit a hole-in-one April 29th on the seventh hole at Moss Creek's South Course. Witnesses were Pixie Scheer, Mike Hartnett and Joan Hartnett.
Ron Cochran hit a hole-in-one April 30th on the fifth hole at Moss Creek's South Course. Witnesses were Tom Andreas and Ken Natter.
Brian Yantis hit a hole-in-one April 30th on the 15th hole at Moss Creek's South Course. Witnesses were Buzz Althans, Ron Deserrano, and George Jones.
Andy Harris hit a hole-in-one April 28th on the 17th hole at Okatie Creek Golf Club. Witnesses were M. Bradt, J. Pinwar, and W. Murphy.
