Bluffton police charge man with strong-arm robbery

A man suspected of beating and robbing two people in a parking lot outside a bar on Sunday has been arrested on a felony strong-arm robbery charge, according to a Bluffton Police Department news release.

Corey Leon Avery, 21, of Bluffton, was charged late Tuesday after one of the victims identified him in a photo lineup, the release said. He posted bond Wednesday morning.

The victim said Avery and at least one other suspect approached him and another person at about 2:30 a.m. in the bar parking lot on Persimmon Street.

The suspects allegedly began hitting them, then went through their pockets and took about $100 and a cellphone, according to the release.

One of the victims was transported to Coastal Carolina Hospital for treatment of minor injuries to the jaw and lip.

A witness also overheard Avery talking to friends about robbing the victim in the parking lot. That witness also identified Avery in a photo lineup, police say.

Police are attempting to identify at least one other suspect involved in the attack, said Lt. Joe Babkiewicz.
