A fox that attacked a 93-year-old woman on a Sun City Hilton Head nature trail during daylight hours April 21 has tested positive for rabies, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.
The fox was captured and euthanized the day after the attack.
The woman was bitten on her right calf and both hands and was treated for rabies at Coastal Carolina Hospital. She was released "in good health," according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office incident report.
There were 107 confirmed cases of animal rabies last year in South Carolina, including 19 involving foxes, according to DHEC. There have been 34 confirmed cases statewide in animals this year.
