The Port Royal Elementary School Improvement Council is one of five finalists for a statewide award that honors accomplishments in parenting and civic engagement.
The S.C. School Improvement Council's Dick and Tunky Riley Award for School Improvement Council Excellence has been awarded annually since 2002.
The school's SIC chairwoman, Susanne Baisch, said the group has made progress on several goals this year, including helping meet the needs of students in poverty and celebrating the school's 100th anniversary.
The community rallied around the school when it faced possible closure, she said, and the SIC has worked to maintain that energy and cooperation after the school board voted to keep the school open.
The winner will be announced March 24.
