Marines injured in Saturday crash identified

Two Marines seriously injured Saturday in a wreck near the roundabout at the intersection of S.C. 170 and S.C. 46 in Bluffton have been identified.

Both remain hospitalized.

Cpl. Jeff Cherry, 20, was driving north on S.C. 170 at about 4 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree, Bluffton police Sgt. Joe Babkiewicz said.

His passenger, Pfc. Allan Williams, 22, was taken by helicopter to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where he was in critical condition Monday, according to Babkiewicz. Cherry was in the same hospital and listed in good condition Monday, Babkiewicz said.

Both men are based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.

The crash remains under investigation, Babkiewicz said.
