A 47-year-old Hilton Head Island man faces larceny charges after a resident reported a car break-in Sunday, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.
The owner of a 1998 Chevrolet pickup called deputies at about 11:30 a.m. after he found the window of his truck smashed at Shelter Cove Community Park and his wife's purse stolen from the cab.
The victim told deputies he had seen a suspicious man walking near the truck as he and his wife walked in the park. As he returned to his truck and saw the damage, he saw the same man leaving the park in a Ford pickup truck, the release said.
When deputies patrolling the area saw a truck matching that vehicle's description, they stopped it and saw a woman's purse in the front seat.

The man refused to get out of the vehicle and then sped off, leading deputies on a brief chase. He later stopped and was arrested, the release said.
Deputies found the missing purse in the truck.
The man faces charges of petit theft, breaking into a vehicle and failure to stop for blue lights. He was awaiting a bond hearing Monday at the county detention center.
