The Beaufort County Board of Voter Registration and Elections is not planning to use the Charles Lind Brown Activity Center at 1001 Hamar St. in Beaufort for offices, elections executive director Scott Marshall said.
The election commission pays about $5,000 a month in rent for headquarters at 15 John Galt Road, and it needs more space, deputy county administrator Bryan Hill said.
Hill said he told Marshall to look at the center, which the county owns and would be rent-free. But the building would have needed modifications for the election board to use, Marshall said.
Some residents were circulating a petition to ensure the center remained a recreational building.
