Robert Smith will discuss the origins of the Civil War at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Heritage Library on Hilton Head Island. Immediate past president of the Heritage Library, Smith will speak on "South Carolina, the Cradle of Secession and Hilton Head and Vicinity at the Core." His talk will focus on the philosophical and economic differences between regions that prevailed before the war. Smith's relatives were involved in events leading to that conflict, according to a library news release. One was Robert Barnwell Rhett, a fiery secessionist who was born in Beaufort. Born with the last name "Smith," he changed his last name to Rhett in 1837 to honor an ancestor. The lecture fee is $8 for library members and $10 for non-members. Discounts for couples are available. Information: 843-686-6560.
