United Way of the Lowcountry reports it has reached 35.7 percent of its goal, with $1,002,165 in contributions during its annual fundraising campaign.
Part of that money funds programs like free tax preparation for working families with adjusted income of $40,000 or less. Last year, Lowcountry Area Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Coalition volunteers, trained by the IRS, helped 1,660 working families complete their tax forms and get refunds, a United Way release said.
Taxpayers who receive tax-preparation services through the VITA program also receive referrals to various assistance agencies.
