A family's St. Helena Island home was destroyed in a blaze early Sunday, according to the Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District.
After spending the afternoon out, the family of three arrived at their home near the intersection of Seaside Road and Sea Island Parkway just after midnight to find a "smoldering pile" where their house once stood, fire district spokesman Lee Levesque said.
The family's golden retriever also died in the blaze, he said.
The fire, which is under investigation by the Beaufort County Fire Scene Investigation team, may have been started by a lighting strike, Levesque said.

Representatives from the Palmetto Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to the scene to provide help to the displaced residents, according to an agency news release.
