United Way reaches 21 percent of goal

United Way of the Lowcountry Inc. reports that $603,477 has been contributed so far to its annual campaign, putting it at 21.5 percent of its fundraising goal.

Programs that benefit from the campaign include those that boost early-childhood literacy in Beaufort and Jasper counties, according to a United Way news release.

Such programs include:

  • Born to Read, which develops and distributes materials to new parents to encourage them to read to their child.
  • The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry, which offers tutoring and access to a reading room.
  • Neighborhood Outreach Coalition, which offers educational workshops and classes for parents.
  • The Penn Center, which hosts after-school programs.
  • Thumbs Up, which provides mentors to help children learn.
  • To contribute to the United Way, to volunteer or for more information, call 843-982-3040 in Beaufort, 843-837-2000 in southern Beaufort County and 843-645-6500 in Jasper County.
