Hilton Head man faces kidnapping, criminal domestic violence charges

A 27-year-old Hilton Head Island man faces felony kidnapping and assault charges after he choked and head-butted his 22-year-old girlfriend, according to arrest warrants. Sonny Michael Vazquez, also known as Yubran Alvares, was arrested Wednesday morning on charges of kidnapping and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature in connection with an incident Sept. 14. He choked his girlfriend "to the point of unconsciousness" and then head-butted her, breaking her nose, when she tried to flee from their Gloucester Road residence, according to arrest warrants. Vazquez refused to let the woman seek medical treatment unless he accompanied her to the hospital, the warrant said. The couple's two-month long relationship has been marked by both physical and emotional abuse, according to Beaufort County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh. "He assaulted her on numerous occasions, threatened to kill her and broke two of her cell phones to try and stop her from calling for help," McIntosh said. "He had been holding her against her will and felt she couldn't leave." Vazquez, who faces pending first-degree burglary and assault charges from an unrelated incident in April, remained in the Beaufort County Detention Center Wednesday. Bond was set at $125,000.
