Port Royal police investigate carjacking

Port Royal police say a 36-year-old woman carjacked another woman early Wednesday at a gas station on Robert Smalls Parkway.

Officers were called to the Kangaroo Express at about 3 a.m. to talk to a woman who said she was inside the convenience store when she was approached by 36-year-old Pamela Nicole Habersham of Beaufort, according to a news release.

The woman said Habersham asked her for a ride to Savannah, then followed her outside and got into the victim's car without permission, the release said.

Habersham demanded the woman drive, then assaulted her and took her car, authorities said.

Habersham was arrested hours later in Charleston after being involved in a five-car crash on Interstate 26 in Charleston County. She was arrested by the Charleston County Sheriff's Office after she ran from the scene, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol, which responded to the wreck. Her charges included leaving the scene of a collision with personal injury, driving under suspension and reckless driving.

Once those charges are cleared, Port Royal police plan to charge her with kidnapping and carjacking, said Staff Sgt. Andre Massey, police spokesman.
