Tropical Storm Maria is following the 2011 trend, curving north well before it reaches South Carolina.
But the storm is expected to push up larger than normal waves on South Carolina beaches and bring a risk of rip currents through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
Maria is expected to pass about 700 miles east of the state early Thursday.
