A 10-year old Hilton Head Island girl was bitten in the face by a pit bull mix Sunday, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office incident report.
The girl was talking with friends underneath a streetlight on Tabby Trail near her home when she saw the dog walking with its owner and the owner's son, according to the report.
The girl walked up to the group and threw up her arms in a gesture to hug the dog when it lunged at her and bit her face.
The dog tore a 2-inch-by-3-inch section of skin under the girl's jaw, according to the report. The injury was not life threatening, according to a doctor.
