Woman accused of running escort service from home

A 49-year-old woman was arrested Thursday by Beaufort police and charged with running an escort service from her home.

Last month, investigators began receiving reports of suspicious activity at the home on Joshua Circle, Police Chief Matt Clancy said.

"The main thing was there were men there at all hours of the day," Clancy added. "They never stayed for very long."

Investigators discovered she was advertising her services on a website, which instructed clients how to make appointments. An undercover officer set up an appointment and arrested her when she came to the door, according to police.

She was charged with operating a sexually oriented business without a permit and operating without a business license, which are violations of city ordinance.

A 52-year-old man at her home at the time of the arrest was charged with unlawful possession of anabolic steroids.

Investigators seized records, appointment books and other evidence, Clancy said.

Clancy said no other women worked for the escort service.

The woman was being held Thursday at the Beaufort County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing, according to the jail log.
