The Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce has created the Tourism, Travel and Convention Division to replace the Visitor & Convention Bureau.
Effective immediately, a chamber news release said, the division will handle tourism promotion, assist the hospitality industry in northern Beaufort County and operate the visitors center on Craven Street in downtown Beaufort.
In March, the chamber had voted to spin off the visitor bureau to handle tourism promotion, but the bureau never operated on its own, the release said.
There have been questions as to which group would be considered northern Beaufort County's designated marketing organization, allowing it to receive more than $100,000 in grants. The chamber is currently the marketing organization, but the visitor bureau had also put in requests for that designation.

Bob Moquin, the former bureau's director, will be the new executive for the division. A board for the division will be formed, with the majority of its members coming from the local resort and lodging industry, the release said.
"The primary objective of the division shall be to increase overnight leisure visits in northern Beaufort County," the release said.
