Tom Bardin Jr., a native of Beaufort and the director of the state Legislative Audit Council, died Saturday morning in Beaufort after going for a run, according to Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.
Allen said Bardin, a full-time resident of Columbia, was taken from a Beaufort residence to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Bardin's cause of death is pending an autopsy at the Medical University of South Carolina. The results of the autopsy are expected today; Allen said he wouldn't discuss Bardin's death or why he was in Beaufort until receiving the report, out of respect for Bardin's family.
Bardin graduated from the University of South Carolina. From 1979 to 1997, he served in various leadership positions on the Legislative Audit Council, which audits state operations. In 1997, Bardin left the audit council to lead the S.C. Department of Social Services division of program performance assessment. He was appointed director of the Legislative Audit Council in 2009, according to the council's website.
