A Bluffton Block Party will celebrate American pride and spirit, according to event organizers.
The event will be from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 10 at Buckwalter Place near the intersection of Buckwalter Parkway and Bluffton Parkway. It will benefit Operation R&R, a Hilton Head Island nonprofit organization that provides free vacations on Hilton Head Island for families of military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
The event will feature bands, entertainment for children, military and fire department displays, and a variety of food. People are invited to "thank our military men and women, as well as police, firefighters, EMS and others who protect our liberty and to celebrate the freedom and privileges their sacrifices guarantee," organizers said in a release.
The Steppin' Stones and the Blue Dogs bands will perform. John Gorman of Bluffton will sing a tribute song in honor of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The Hilton Head Barbershop Quartet will sing the national anthem and the "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
Tickets are $5 per person. Active-duty military, police, fire and rescue personnel, and their immediate families will be admitted free with proper identification.
There will be a VIP tent for $100 per person; tickets can be purchased at the State Farm office at Buckwalter Place or by calling 843-837-2886. All proceeds from the tent will also go to Operation R&R.
Gates open at 11:15 a.m. Attendees should bring chairs, but pets or coolers aren't allowed. A rain date will be Sept. 11 from 1 to 6 p.m.
The event's premier sponsors are Hargray Communications, Buckwalter Place, Clear Channel Radio, Lowcountry Business Circle and State Farm.
