A former Hilton Head Island bookkeeper has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $78,000 from two local businesses, according to the 14th Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office.
David A. Smith, 42, admitted to four counts of breach of trust and one count of forgery. He was sentenced Thursday by Judge Thomas Cooper to two years in prison, to be followed by five years of probation. Smith also was ordered to pay $78,070 in restitution.
While working for According to the Books bookkeeping business, Smith wrote checks to himself and his wife from two businesses -- a pool maintenance company and a dentist. He also used business credit cards for personal purchases.
The case was prosecuted by assistant solicitor Francine Norz and investigated by Sgt. Chuck Runnion of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
