Mitchum leading rain-delayed S.C. Open at May River

The first day of the Carolinas PGA Section's 60th annual South Carolina Open wrapped up Tuesday with 14 players still on the course after rainy weather interrupted play during the afternoon at Palmetto Bluff.

Two-time S.C. Open champion Kelly Mitchum of Southern Pines, N.C., was the clubhouse leader when play was halted for the day. Mitchum shot 3-under-par 69 at May River Golf Club, putting him one shot ahead of amateur Payne McLeod of Reidsville, N.C.

Bluffton's David Rogers is among a group of three players who finished at 1 under, and Hilton Head Island's Colby Wilson and Bluffton's Jordan Pomeranz shot even par.

The first round will resume at 7:30 a.m. today, followed by the second round. The field will be cut to the low 44 players and ties after 36 holes.
