Man charged with firing into apartment

A Ridgeland man has been accused of shooting at his girlfriend's Hilton Head Island apartment Tuesday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Joseph Habersham Jr., 35, was charged with discharging a firearm into a dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon for allegedly firing multiple shots at Hilton Head Gardens at 11 Southwood Park Drive.

Habersham had been in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, 28, and later called and threatened to "shoot up the apartment," the Sheriff's Office said.

At about 2 a.m., the girlfriend and a 27-year-old man in the apartment heard a noise outside. As the man looked out the window, multiple shots were fired into the apartment from a wooded area. The man received a superficial wound to the forehead, possibly as a result of a round entering the apartment, according to the Sheriff's Office.

A witness reported seeing Habersham drive off in a red Honda. Deputies soon found him at a gas station in the Moss Creek area. The car had two flat tires from striking a curb.

Habersham was in the county jail Tuesday awaiting bond hearing.

The man in the apartment refused medical attention and declined to cooperate in pressing further charges against Habersham, the Sheriff's Office said.
