The Carolinas PGA Section's 60th annual South Carolina Open gets under way Tuesday with 136 players from North Carolina and South Carolina set to tee it up at May River Golf Club at Palmetto Bluff.
Leading the field is 52-year-old Rick Lewallen of Kannapolis, N.C., who enters as the leader in the Carolinas PGA Bob Boyd Player of the Year Points Challenge race. Lewallen, who already has won three Carolinas PGA events this year, including the North Carolina Open last month, also ranks third in the senior points race.
Three-time S.C. Open champion Kelly Mitchum and defending champion Charles Frost are also in the field, along with 2006 champion Jordan Pomeranz.
The tournament is open to all North Carolina and South Carolina residents with a handicap index of 5.5 or lower.
Play gets under way at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and continues through Thursday.
The field will be cut to the low 45 and ties after Wednesday's second round.
