A police officer stopped a driver Wednesday on Buckwalter Parkway and discovered the SUV was stolen and the man behind the wheel was wanted in North Carolina, according to the Bluffton Police Department.
During the stop around 6 p.m., a search also found marijuana and prescription pills, the department said.
The officer recognized the Chevy Trail Blazer with Ohio plates as one that had been reported stolen from Hilton Head Island this week.
Tony Demetrius Thomas, 25, of Quinn Court in Bluffton was charged with possession of stolen property, being a fugitive from justice, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, providing false information to a law enforcement officer, driving under suspension and on a bench warrant from Beaufort County Family Court.
He was being held Thursday at the county detention center under a $36,622 bond, according to the jail log.
