Local food outlet at Habersham to connect growers, consumers

A new, nontraditional grocery that allows customers to purchase locally grown food directly from growers has opened in Habersham Marketplace.

Created by a group of local food enthusiasts, Sea Islands Local Outlet, or SILO, is an off-shoot of the Habersham Farmers Market, according to a news release.

Products will include fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, milk, cheese, breads and desserts, according to the store's website.

"People know what is available to them each week, can choose exactly what they want and pick up everything in one central location," SILO owner and operator David Hislop said in the release. "It's local, it's fresh and people feel empowered by their ability to choose ahead of time what foods they eat and where they come from."

Customers can shop in person or place their orders online and pick them up on a designated "market day," according to SILO's website.

The website includes a list of available products and prices.

The store will carry non-perishable items and refrigerated and frozen goods.

It might eventually offer more perishable goods -- such as bread, fruits and vegetables -- as well. Those items are currently available online.

Like at a traditional farmers market, the growers and producers pay a fee to sell their products to customers through SILO, the release stated.

Customers pay a $50 annual membership fee to help cover the store's operating expenses. The fee also allows customers to participate in events, such as tastings, cooking demonstrations and lectures, the release stated.

People can purchase items from the online market twice to test the program before they are charged the annual membership fee, according to the website.

More than 90 percent of the products are grown in the Lowcountry, and 10 percent are from locations within a 200-mile radius of the store, according to the website.

The store is located at 7A Market St. in Habersham Marketplace. Customers can make their purchases Monday morning through Wednesday evening each week and pick up and pay for their orders after 4 p.m. Fridays.
