Armed suspects stun, rob man outside Lady's Island bank

A 32-year-old employee of Fripp Island Resort was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday as he dropped off several bags of cash at a Lady's Island bank, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office reported.

The man had gone to the Palmetto State Bank on Lady's Island Drive to drop off the weekend deposits at about 6 p.m. when he was approached by two men in the parking lot, a Sheriff's Office news release said.

One shot the victim with a stun gun, while the other pointed a semi-automatic pistol at him and demanded the deposit bags, the release said.

Along with the bags of cash, they stole the victim's cellphone and car keys, according to a Sheriff's Office report. The unidentified men, described only as black males, ran, and attempts by the sheriff's dog-tracking team to locate them were unsuccessful. They possibly drove off in a car.

The victim was uninjured, authorities said.

Sgt. Robin McIntosh, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman, said it is unclear how the robbers came upon the resort employee.

"That is unknown, (but) I think it would be reasonable to consider that they likely were waiting on him," McIntosh said.

The FBI typically handles back robberies but because the robbery happened outside the bank, the Sheriff's Office is investigating, McIntosh said.

"This is not being considered a bank robbery," she said.
