Two men were arrested late Wednesday and charged with robbing and beating a 76-year-old man inside his home.
Donald Peters, 27, of Burton and Kurtis Edwards, 38, of Seabrook are charged with attempted murder, first-degree burglary, second-degree burglary, armed robbery and safe-cracking.
They are accused of breaking into the man's home on Winsor Road at about 2 a.m. Wednesday and beating him with collapsible batons, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release. They stole his wallet and broke into a locked closet and safe, stealing about $4,500, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The victim was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital where he refused additional medical treatment, the release said.
Investigators believe Edwards' girlfriend, Lauren Baughman, 23, who was hired by the man to assist with chores, purposely left the front door unlocked hours before the robbery. She was charged as an accessory and was being held Thursday at the county Detention Center, with bond set at $150,000.
Edwards and Peters also are accused of breaking into the victim's barbershop on Parris Island Gateway shortly before the home invasion, the release said. They were being held Thursday at the Detention Center, with bond set at $235,000 each.
