Dennis Eugene Kennedy, 44, was charged Tuesday with one count of felony ill treatment of animals after shooting a dog on his Burton property along Hampton Drive, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.
Just after 7 p.m., a neighbor told Kennedy his dog was running loose on her property and asked him to retrieve it.
Kennedy removed the dog. Soon after, the neighbor heard a gunshot and called law enforcement, the release said.
Deputies went to Kennedy's home and saw a dead dog with a gunshot wound to its neck. Kennedy told deputies he shot the dog because it had been running around and growling.
Kennedy was released on his own recognizance Wednesday from the county Detention Center.
