Beaufort County sheriff's deputies who arrested a Hilton Head Island man for disorderly conduct after he was found staggering and swearing near a gas station also found stolen items in his backpack, according to incident reports.
Steven Wilson, 40, is charged with public disorderly conduct, receiving stolen goods, second-degree burglary and breaking and entering of a vehicle, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center log. He is being held for prosecution.
Several families renting a vacation home together on Dove Street had reported more than $7,000 in personal electronics and purses stolen Thursday evening from the unlocked home, according to the reports.
At about 12:45 a.m. Friday, deputies saw a man falling down and swearing at customers in front of a gas station on Pope Avenue. After arresting him for disorderly conduct, they discovered about $2,000 worth of the stolen items in his unzipped backpack and returned them to the victims, the reports said.
