Bluffton man charged with animal cruelty

A 27-year-old Bluffton man faces misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty after he allegedly beat his pit bull in a grocery store parking lot Saturday afternoon, according to a Bluffton Police Department news release Thursday.

Witnesses told police the man, who was upset the dog had urinated on clothing inside his car, pulled the 3-year-old pit bull named Lucy out of the car into the Publix parking lot at 80 Baylor Drive and began striking it. The dog tried to run away, but the man dragged the animal back to the car and struck it several more times, the release said.

Several people asked him to stop hitting the dog, and others called 911, the release said. The man left the parking lot, and police found him on a nearby trail, where he was arrested without incident.

Lucy, who was not injured, was taken to the Palmetto Animal League shelter in Bluffton. The man was released on his own recognizance Sunday from the Beaufort County Detention Center.
