Red Cross: Type O negative supply critically low

The American Red Cross Southern Blood Services Region is making a plea for type O negative blood donors to restore a diminishing supply.

Type O negative blood can be transfused to patients with any blood type, making it especially useful in emergency situations. A shortage often occurs during the summer, when donations drop because of vacations and schools hosting fewer drives.

The Southern Blood Services Region provides blood to more than 120 hospitals and must have 1,200 people give blood and platelets every weekday to meet hospital demand. To find a blood drive and make an appointment, call 1-800-733-2767 or go to redcrossblood.org.
