The driver of a United Van Lines tractor-trailer died Saturday night after the truck he was driving ran off Interstate 95 near Ridgeland and caught fire, according to a South Carolina Highway Patrol news release.
Authorities believe the driver, who has not been identified because his body was badly burned, was heading to Florida, according to Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls. An autopsy will be performed today at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Sauls said.
The tractor-trailer was traveling south on I-95 near mile marker 27 at about 6 p.m. when it ran off the left side of the interstate into the median, struck several trees and caught fire. No other injuries were reported, according to the release.
Highway Patrol crews waited until daylight to haul the trailer from the median. The crash remains under investigation, the release said.
