Summerville out-slugs Ospreys, 19-16

The days won't always be like this -- at least that's what the Beaufort Ospreys hope.

After 27 innings in three days, they are ready for a break. A marathon Thursday proved a fitting end to the stretch.

The Ospreys fell to Summerville, 19-16. Beaufort dropped to 1-2 in American Legion League 1.

Summerville won after surviving Beaufort's furious comeback. The Ospreys scored seven during the eighth inning to pull even and create late drama.

But Beaufort's pitching was worn thin. The Ospreys trotted out six pitchers during the contest. Each was greeted rudely by the Summerville lineup. Summerville blasted five home runs during the game.

"Once they got those few hits, it was just contagious," Ospreys coach Bryan Thompson said. "It didn't really matter who I ran out there."

Thompson said his group was probably done for the week, though they are scheduled to play a tournament this weekend. He said the Ospreys probably won't have the pitching needed to compete after the loaded midweek stretch.

Ospreys starter Cam Thomas was chased during a seven-run fourth inning for Summerville. After the Ospreys came back, Thompson opted for Junior Delatorre in the ninth after reliever Kyle Dawson allowed a leadoff double. Delatorre started the Ospreys' opener Tuesday but had thrown fewer than 90 pitches.

But Summerville pushed across three to end the slugfest.

The Ospreys were without multiple players, including Weber Pike, who stayed home to prepare for Friday exams. With graduation and its various functions planned for the weekend, Thompson said the Ospreys could shut it down until next week.

"We were completely out of players," he said.

Beaufort's big inning was highlighted by Dawson's three-run shot to right field. Mitchell Stewart's RBI-double sent the game into the ninth tied.

After the high school season, the players have had to adjust to the longer nine-inning games, said David Tilton, one of the Ospreys' six pitchers on the night. He said the extra frames allow teams more chances to get back in a game.

"It was a long game," he said. "We put up a fight at the end but came up empty."
