Friends of the Rivers has a new name and mission and will soon have a new executive director, according to a release from the nonprofit environmental group.
Now called the Port Royal Sound Foundation, the name change reflects the group's growth and additional resources, according to board member Chris Marsh. With grants from the Port Royal Sound Fund and the Lowcountry Institute, scientist and educator Kathryn Madden will lead the foundation starting Aug. 1, the release said.
The foundation plans to build on the water-quality education and outreach programs started by Friends founder Nancy Schilling, Marsh said. The foundation seeks to protect and study Port Royal Sound and its estuaries.
