A Beaufort County sheriff's officer performed lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a 59-year-old Okatie man after he was found unconscious Sunday in the May River in greater Bluffton, according to a Sheriff's Office report.
Sgt. Tom Hodgins was on boat patrol about 3:45 p.m. near the river's Myrtle Island sandbar when he was flagged down by a crowd attempting to help a man who was face down in the water, the report said.
Witnesses told Hodgins the man had been drinking beer and had passed out. Hodgins and two other men carried the man to the patrol boat where Hodgins began CPR, the report said.
After about four compressions, the man began breathing and was taken by ambulance to Hilton Head Hospital.
A nurse told Hodgins the man would be treated overnight and was expected to recover.
