A woman's body was found by a fisherman at about 8:30 a.m. Monday near Parris Island, close where Archer's Creek meets the Broad River, according to Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.
The body has not been identified, and Allen did not know the woman's age or how long she was in the water. An autopsy -- to determine her identity and the cause of death -- is scheduled for Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Allen said.
A spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard in Charleston said a rescue crew was called to the creek at about 8:55 a.m. by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office and was dismissed at about 12:05 p.m. by the Coroner's Office. The drowning did not appear to be "maritime-related," Operations Specialist First Class Mike Comess said.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating, and Lt. Jimmy Walton, a department spokesman, said additional information would be released when investigators determine the woman's identity.
