Rotary honors sheriff's deputy

Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Cpl. John Gobel has been named the 2011 Jesse L. Altman Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the Beaufort Rotary Club.

Local agencies nominate those who best personify the Rotary motto -- "service above self" -- and the club selects a winner.

Gobel officially retired from law enforcement in 2006 but continued to serve as a reserve deputy and as the master dive instructor for the Sheriff's Dive Team, according to a Sheriff's Office news release Friday. He rejoined the Sheriff's Office in 2009 and was assigned to Northern Enforcement Investigations.

He has one of the highest arrest rates in the county and the highest case-clearance rate, the release said.
