District introduces eight options for school closings

  • Few residents turned out for the first in a series of public meetings the Beaufort County School District is hosting to discuss possible school closings and attendance zone changes for the 2012-13 school year.
  • About 20 people attended Wednesday's meeting at Bluffton High School. Most were Board of Education members, school principals and other district staff.

Superintendent Valerie Truesdale said the district is eager to gather feedback on options for school closures identified in an analysis by district staff.

"Our goal is to get ideas from the community," Truesdale said. " ... Pull your creativity out because we are in tough economic times."

A list of eight schools to be considered was presented publicly Wednesday, after school board members and principals reviewed it last week.

The school board voted last week to direct district staff to create a list of schools that could be closed for the 2012-13 school year to save on operating costs. The board has agreed it will not close any schools next school year.

    The options discussed Wednesday were:
