Free boat checks for Memorial Day weekend

Beginning Memorial Day weekend and throughout the summer, S.C. Department of Natural Resources officers will patrol the state's waterways and conduct courtesy boat inspections. The officers try to reduce boating accidents, injuries and fatalities, according to a news release.

Inspections are scheduled for the following Beaufort County locations:

  • 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at C.C. Haigh Jr. Landing on Pinckney Island near Hilton Head Island.
  • 10 a.m. to noon Sunday at Edgar Glenn Landing at the Lemon Island bridge.
  • Those who are not in compliance with safety regulations or registration requirements will not be ticketed during the complimentary inspections. Instead, they will be given an opportunity to correct the problem before they launch their boat, the release said.

The Democratic Club of Beaufort County South of the Broad will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the community room at Palmetto Electric, 111 Mathews Drive on Hilton Head Island.

    Business-license renewals due May 31

Beaufort County business-license renewal forms are due May 31, after which a 5 percent fee will be added for each month late.

Any business in unincorporated Beaufort County must have a county license, according to a county news release. Licenses don't expire until the end of the year, but the renewal process begins now.

Renewal applications were mailed in February but can also be found on the "Business" page at www.bcgov.net or at the county's two business-license offices -- the second floor of the administration building at 100 Ribaut Road in Beaufort, or the third floor of the Myrtle Park Professional Center at 4819 Bluffton Parkway in Bluffton.

Processing and approval usually take seven to 10 business days, the release said.
