Officials tight-lipped about visit by defense secretary

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates will be in Beaufort today, but area military and Pentagon officials are tightlipped about the visit.

Gates is expected to arrive today at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort but does not have meetings or events scheduled at the base, according to an air station spokeswoman.

A spokeswoman for Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island referred questions about Gates' visit to the Pentagon.

Pentagon officials did not respond to requests for comment Thursday.

Workshop to give details of arts grant

A grant-seekers' workshop for artists and art organizations based in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties will be at 6 p.m. Monday at the Arts Council of Beaufort County/ARTworks.

The workshop, at 2127 Boundary St. in Beaufort, will provide an overview of the Expansion Arts Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation and answer questions about applying and eligibility. The fund promotes and expands the works of new and emerging arts groups and individual artists.

The deadline to apply for the grant program is June 20.

Registration coming for BPD movie club

The Beaufort Police Department will begin accepting applications next month for its summer movie club.

Parents can register their children for the club at the department's substation on Duke Street from June 6 to 9.

The movie club, founded 37 years ago, provides an opportunity for children ages 5 through 12 to join officers at the Plaza 8 Movie Theater on Robert Smalls Parkway for a movie and safety education.

The club's first meeting will be June 11.

Wilson to speak at GOP women's group

U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson, R-West Columbia, will speak to the Republican Women of Southern Beaufort County at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Truffles restaurant on Pope Avenue. The event is for women only, and seating is limited. For reservations: Email jmmdms@yahoo.com.
