Local Red Cross volunteers head to disaster areas

The Lowcountry Chapter of the American Red Cross has deployed 11 volunteers -- three of whom are from Bluffton -- to flooding and tornado disaster areas, according to a news release.

The organization's Palmetto Service Center in Bluffton is hosting new disaster-volunteer training from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 21 at the Palmetto Electric Building in Ridgeland. Reservations are required. Contact shapirol@usa.redcross.org or 843-757-7437.

Four ways to donate to the Red Cross relief efforts in the South:

  • Text "REDCROSS" to 90999, which will send a $10 donation to the National Disaster Relief Fund. The charge will appear on your next cellphone bill.
  • Call 1-800-Red-Cross.
  • Go to RedCross.org.
  • Mail a check to the American Red Cross, 8085 Rivers Ave., Suite F, North Charleston, SC 20406. The donation should be marked Red Cross Disaster Relief.
